Spelt is one of the world’s oldest domesticated crops. People have grown this grain for over 9,000 years, and it has genes that trace back to cultivars planted in ancient Mesopotamia. In fact, the Sumerians — who are believed to be the world’s first brewers — almost certainly made beer from spelt. Spelt malt produces mild, nutty flavors backed by tangy acidic notes. It’s considered to be a good wheat alternative. Sold with the hull on, this spelt malt is good for adding rustic character to traditional grain bills.
